The novel was originally circulated in Russia via samizdat ('self-published') literature in 1966, after Solzhenitsyn was denied official publication of his works in 1963, due to the tightening of ideological structures on cultural activity in the Soviet Union. After writing a letter criticising Joseph Stalin in 1945, Solzhenitsyn was arrested and exiled to Central Russia.
